School Visits & Creative Talks

Now open for author visits 2025!

My picture book ‘The Month of Ramadan’ has just been released in US/Canada by Interlink Books. This story stars Deenie, a young Muslim girl who is tries to fast for the first time. As with everything that is difficult and important, she comes up against some challenges, but learns that Ramadan is about so much more than giving up food and water. It’s the kind of discovery and growth that everyone can celebrate, regardless of faith.
This year, Ramadan falls neatly within the month of March, and I would love the opportunity to meet young readers and explore different facets of this practice and celebration in class.
I’m very lucky to have this title published in 3 different countries, including as ‘The Month That Makes The Year’ with Allen & Unwin in Australia, and as ‘Yılımı Şenlendiren Ay : Ramazan’ by Profil Çocuk in Türkiye.

However I currently live in none of those countries, but instead in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

So while I’m able to visit schools in Riyadh in person, I offer virtual or pre-recorded visits for elsewhere in the world.

During the session, I’ll introduce Ramadan as part of the lunar Hijri calendar (and touch on moon phases) and why it is special for Muslims.

What do Muslims do during Ramadan? What are the rules of fasting? Who fasts, and who doesn’t?

I’ll share my experiences fasting in different countries and climes but also explain why I think Ramadan is so much more than fasting.

How does a community of different faiths come together during Ramadan?

We’ll read the book together, and since I’m both the author and illustrator, I’ll be able to share some ‘Easter eggs’ hidden in the words and pictures.

I’ll do an illustration demonstration of Deenie and her cat (with tips on how to draw your own characters and pets), and answer all your questions.

Inda was our guest speaker for our Ramadan series last year. We are based in Oman, and we did an online session, which was a big hit with the children. Inda’s storytelling, as well as her gorgeous book, were very engaging for the children. Everyone enjoyed, and we got great reviews about the story and Inda, too. We look forward to having her back again this year, making Ramadan a little bit more special.

We were absolutely delighted to welcome Inda Ahmad Zahri to our school for a workshop with our Year 4 pupils. From the moment she walked into the assembly, her infectious energy captivated the entire room. Inda’s engaging storytelling and interactive activities kept the children thoroughly entertained, sparking their imaginations and encouraging them to explore their own creativity.
Her passion for writing was evident, and she inspired our young learners to express themselves through words. It was wonderful to see their eyes light up with excitement as they participated in the workshop, sharing their ideas and fairytales with confidence.
Inda’s visit left a lasting impression on our pupils, and many have expressed their eagerness to write their own stories. We can’t thank Inda enough for her time, enthusiasm, and the inspiration she provided—it was truly a memorable experience for all!
